The Book Thief
Author

Review
Death--the personified form--is the narrator of The Book Thief, and begins the story by telling three glimpses of the times when he has seen Liesel, a young girl in Nazi Germany.
The first time Death sees Liesel is when her mother travels with her and her brother to leave them in foster care. Her brother dies on the trip, and Liesel makes her way to her foster parents alone.
After some time, the son of Liesel's foster father's friend--a Jew--comes into their house, and stays in their basement in order to hide from the Nazis.
Being in an extremely cold basement day after day isn't good for him--his name is Max--and he falls into a coma.
Shortly after Max wakes up, Liesel's foster father shows kindness to the parade of Jews passing through town. And he is whipped for giving one bread. Max feels that, by staying with them, he is going to cause trouble for them when a Nazi finds out. So he leaves.
Some more time passes, and Liesel begins book-stealing in earnest. A brief talk with the mayor's wife shows Liesel that she can also write books as well as steal and read them.
So Liesel is writing in her foster parents' house's basement when her street is bombed, and pretty much everyone there dies in their sleep, because the air-raid alarms didn't sound soon enough. This part made me cry--not the actual deaths, but how Liesel reacts to the deaths. Rudy, a boy who had lived next-door, who she had gone on many adventures with, and who had repeatedly asked her to kiss him, is dead, and, for the first time, Liesel kisses him.
The last few chapters skim briefly over the rest of Liesel's life.

Review
I loved this book. Tamsin Greene has no Talent in a family of witches with Talent. Her older sister Rowena is the perfect example of a powerful witch, because she can use her voice to persuade people to do whatever she wants them to. When Tamsin pretends to be her sister when talking to a professor looking for a magical clock, she gets into more trouble than she could have ever hoped for. She discovers she does have a Talent, and has had one since she was born, but people were told not to tell her or use their Talents against her. Tamsin has the most powerful Talent anyone has ever seen, she can copy other people's Talents and use them against the person. She can control people due to what their Talents are, and if they try to use it on her too many times. I'm waiting for the second book.
