| Title | Remember When...ice skaters jammed the Milwaukee River? |
| Description | Hundreds of Milwaukeeans were silhouetted against the ice of the Milwaukee River on this chilly Sunday afternoon of Jan. 10, 1897. Today the only river area sanctioned for skating is a sheltered bay inlet in Lincoln Park. Modern skaters take to the public rinks and lagoons, which offer safety, shelter and, often, musical accompaniment. The river is no longer safe enough for ice skating. A reason for this was offered recently in Milwaukee Magazine: "With some 250 sewer outfalls in the lower river alone, the chemical mix of the water is that of a low grade antifreeze." To the right in the picture was the Milwaukee Woolen Mills and in the background the Locust St. bridge (formerly called Folsom St.).
