Remember When...horse drawn wagons used Water Street?
TitleRemember When...horse drawn wagons used Water Street?
DescriptionHorses and buggies, horseless carriages and electric streetcars all used E. Water st. (now N. Water st.) in June of 1914 when the above photo was taken. It was a time of change for the city as the automobile came into vogue. Notice the electric lines and telephone cables that crisscrossed the downtown sky. They went underground when the streets were paved. Waldheim and Co., Marshall and Ilsley bank, Swoboda's cafe and the First National bank building (now the First Wisconsin National bank) lined the street leading to the 18 year old city hall.
