| Title | Remember When...the cornerstone was laid for Gesu Church? |
| Description | More than 20, 000 people showed up on May 21, 1893, to witness the laying of the cornerstone for the main (northwest) tower of Gesu Church, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave. The cornerstone, made of buff Bedford limestone, weighed more than 3, 000 pounds and measured 5 1/2 by 1 1/2 feet. A large hole was chiseled out of the upper face of the stone, and a time capsule was placed into the space. It contained such items as daily newspapers, American currency, names of the clergy and church subscribers, a Marquette University catalog, and postage stamps commemorating the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of the New World. During the ceremony, a smaller stone was mortared over the opening for the tin box. The church is shown under construction at right. The parish is beginning a yearlong celebration of the 100th anniversary with a Cornerstone Dinner tomorrow, May 23. "Remember When" is prepared by the Milwaukee Public Library with resources from the local history collection. |
