Remember When...Milwaukee had pedestrian tunnels like this?
Remember When...Milwaukee had pedestrian tunnels like this?
TitleRemember When...Milwaukee had pedestrian tunnels like this?
DescriptionOnce automobiles became popular, cities had to do something about protecting pedestrians from the machines. This pedestrian subway at 13th St. and Wisconsin Ave. was built to allow people to walk across the street safely. Constructed in an almost art deco style, it served the city for many years, used by class after class of Marquette University students crossing busy Wisconsin Ave. Eventually students declined to use the underground passage, partly because petty criminals were a menace, especially at night. Eventually the tunnel was removed. This picture is from the early 1930s. "Remember When" is prepared by the Milwaukee Public Library with resources from the local history collection.
