Remember When...the Eagles Club building was new?
TitleRemember When...the Eagles Club building was new?
DescriptionThe Eagles Club building at 24th St. and Wisconsin Ave., now the Central Park Athletic Club and Entertainment Center, was built for $1.25 million in 1925. Designed by architect Russell Barr Williamson, this imposing steel and stone edifice for many years was considered the grandest Eagles building in the country. A bas relief along the roofline depicts in stylized fashion the goals and activities of the Eagles, a fraternal organization. Measuring 144 by 234 feet, the building had an auditorium that seated 6, 200, a 30-by-70 foot swimming pool and the "largest and most beautiful ballroom in the United States, " according to information on this post card. That Million Dollar Ballroom attracted famous orchestras and great crowds of dancers for years. A new Greater Milwaukee Eagles Club plans to meet in rented space at the old clubhouse in the future. Its predecessor filed for bankruptcy in August 1988 after years of declining membership. The ballroom for about six months operated under the name Omnibus and became a concert hall for live rock music. Omnibus closed this month. "Remember When" is prepared by the Milwaukee Public Library with resources from the local history collection.
