| Title | Remember When...The Wisconsin Ave. viaduct was built? |
| Description | This photo, taken in August 1909, shows the Wisconsin Ave. viaduct halfway toward completion. The $550, 000, 2, 088-foot-long structure, completed in 1911, rose 80 feet over the Menomonee River Valley, linking Milwaukee with the town of Wauwatosa. Designed by New York engineer Edwin Thatcher, who won a $1, 500 prize for his plan of beauty and simplicity, the bridge spans 38th to 44th Sts. It overlooks the Pigsville neighborhood, railyards and the Menomonee River. Newton Construction and later National Engineering employed 300 workers and used 900 tons of steel, 55, 000 barrels of cement and 2.5 million board feet of lumber to do the job. The bridge, now showing signs of its 76 years, aided in Milwaukee's westward growth. Photograph and information provided by John Haun and the Milwaukee Public Library local history collection. |
