| Title | Remember When...men, horses and steam built railroads? |
| Description | This picture, taken in 1910, shows a railroad bed being prepared in the then-rural area south of present-day Mill Rd. and 64th St. Crews from the Chicago & North Western Railroad built a right-of-way using steam power, horse power and lots of manual labor. The steam shovel would level high ground and dump the earth onto the horse-drawn wagons, which in turn filled out low-lying places so the track would be fairly level, allowing trains to run more efficiently. At about the same time a railroad roundhouse became a center of activity west of the construction site and north of the old village of Butler. Houses, stores and taverns sprang up there at the intersection of Brookfield, Menomonee Falls, Granville and Wauwatosa. The new settlement was called New Butler to distinguish it from the already established village. Photograph and information provided by Joseph Bacher. "Remember When" is a feature of the Milwaukee Public Library. |
