TitleRemember When...these town houses graced Broadway and Wells st.?
DescriptionWhere the new Marshall and Illsley auto bank and parking structure now reaches toward the sky, these town houses, probably some of the first structures of their kind in the city, once stood. Modified Federal in style, they were built by an early Milwaukee mason, John G. Bellangee, in 1846-'47. Each of the dwellings in the block had its own entrance with its own decorative wrought iron railing. Eight chimneys dotted the roof. They were required by the open fireplaces and the stoves used for cooking and heating. The building was located at the southwest corner of Main and Oneida sts., now N. Broadway and E. Wells st. The town house at the far left was torn down in 1916 and replaced by a five story structure. The remaining three "dwellings" were razed in the 1930's. (Picture, courtesy of Herman Wudtke, 508 E. Dover st., and information from the local history collection of the Milwaukee public library.)
