Remember When...The Avenue was lined with movie marquees?
TitleRemember When...The Avenue was lined with movie marquees?
DescriptionWhen automobiles had running boards and streetcars lined W. Wisconsin Ave., the marquees of a number of movie houses dotted the street. In this view looking east from 7th St., the Wisconsin, Palace, Strand and Alhambra are all in view. The Schroeder Hotel (now the Marc Plaza), built in 1927, is the tall building at the right. Another block west of the hotel and on the north side of Wisconsin Ave. is the even taller Wisconsin Tower Building, once called the Mariner Tower after its builder, John Mariner. Built between 1929 and 1930 from a design by Chicago architects, it is an example of the "moderne" style and is decorated with art-deco details on the lower levels. Then as now, prominent buildings were used for advertising purposes, and this one carried a neon sign for the Boston Store. Photograph courtesy of I.C. Scroggins.
