| Title | Remember When...The Lakeside Power Plant was a utility pioneer? |
| Description | A 62-year-old "employe" of the Wisconsin Electric Power Co. will be retired this fall when the Lakeside Power Plant in St. Francis shuts down for good. But there will be a retirement party first, in the form of an open house Sunday, June 26, at the plant, 3744 S. Lake Dr. This photo of it was taken in October 1935. The facility opened in 1921 as the world's first power plant to burn pulverized coal exclusively. The process had been developed earlier at Wisconsin Electric's Edison St. Plant at Wells St. and the Milwaukee River. The Lakeside plant was converted in 1969 to burn natural gas and oil. Visitors to the open house (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) should wear comfortable clothes and low-heeled shoes, since tours will include some stair climbing and crossing of open grating. Hard hats and safety glasses will be provided. Do you have a photo for "Remember When"? Send it to the Milwaukee Public Library, 814 W. Wisconsin Ave., Milwaukee 53201. All photos are copied and returned. (Note: The newspaper feature ceased in 1994. Please do not send photos for Remember When.) |
