| Title | Remember When...cars traveled east on E. Clybourn St.? |
| Description | In 1959 Downtown Milwaukee had not yet become crisscrossed by the expressway, and many of today's one-way streets were still traveled by autos in both directions. A stream of cars made their way east on Clybourn St. at Water St. when this photo was taken. On the corner is the Button Block, built in 1892 by Charles Pearson Button as a monument to his father, Henry Harrison Button, a pioneer and successful druggist. It still is a familiar Milwaukee landmark. The younger Button was born in a hotel that once stood on the site. The seven-story building is rock-faced red sandstone with dark red pressed brick on the first two stories. A turretlike structure decorates the corner and entrance to the building. In the 1950s and 1960s, the building was the home of Northwestern Furniture Co. In the mid-'70s it became the Mad Hatter, and since 1979 has been the address of Park Avenue, a popular Milwaukee dance spot.
