| Title | Remember When...N. 3rd St. sparkled during State Fair? |
| Description | The lights of Broadway had competition when Milwaukee decked herself out to celebrate. During State Fair Week in 1906, N. 3rd St. was aglow with special displays of electric lights, welcoming visitors from all over Wisconsin. This photograph was taken looking south of Grand (now Wisconsin) Ave. In addition to bright arcs of lights framing the street, the electric lights for the Schlitz Palm Garden (in the left background) and the Davidson Theater across the street beckoned to visitors. Boston Store's annex, selling hats and shoes, stood on the southwest corner of 3rd and Grand and faced Leo Abraham's cigar store on the northwest side. All Milwaukee's street lights were electric by 1921, but as early as 1890 much of the business district had electric lights. Special lighting displays during grand events like the fair were an important part of festivities in the early 1900s. Photograph and information from the Milwaukee Public Library local history collection. |
