TitleRemember When...11th and Wisconsin av. looked like this?
DescriptionThe area of N. 11th st. and W. Wisconsin av., now near the heart of the city's bustling metropolitan area, was a peaceful residential district when this picture was taken in the first decade of the 20th century. Tall, stately trees lined the sidewalks, and the homes of some of the city's leading citizens bordered the streets. The building at the right, Johnston hall, housed Marquette university even at that time. The fine residence standing just to the east belonged to Dr. William Mackie, a Milwaukee physician. When Dr. Mackie died in 1910, the property was offered for sale for $30, 500. The university's trustees decided that they had better buy it for a law school, but money was too scarce, so their plans were changed. Marquette rented the home temporarily and bought it in 1912. In 1923, the law building which still stands today was erected on the site. The two houses down the street from the Mackie residence on N. 11th were also purchased by the university. One was attached to the law school as an annex and the other, the residence of Gen. and Mrs. Frederick C. Winkler and their family, became the first student union. At this same time the area across the street on Wisconsin av. included the residences of Dr. Lewis Tisdale; James H. Pratt, vice-president of the Beals and Torrey Shoe Co.; Henry J. Levy, vice-president of the National Knitting Co., and Dr. Arthur J. Burgess, a physician. This same view looking south on N. 11th would today show the concrete ramps of an expanding expressway system.
