| Title | Remember When...sidewalks were made of wood? |
| Description | This foursome - posed in front of the family store and residence at 769 3rd St. (later 2213 N. 3rd St.) - looked a little resigned about being photographed, especially with work aprons covering their long skirts. The lady on the far right, it was said, ran back inside at the last minute to don a dressy, plumed hat for the occasion. The older women were sisters: Ida Sandlers Schultz; Elizabeth Sandlers Schultz with her daughter, Lydia Schultz (now Arnold), in her arms; and Helena Sandlers. The business inside was sausage manufacturing, but there are a number of interesting details about this photo of the shop's exterior. One is the small metal box mounted to the right of the door. It was for copies of "Seebote, " a German language newspaper. The wooden sidewalk in front may look like a remnant from pioneer times, but it actually was a vast civic improvement over walkways paved with gravel. The picture was taken in 1891. Photograph and information provided by Henry Otto and the Milwaukee Public Library local history collection. |
