| Title | Remember When...hankies sold for 5 cents? |
| Description | Gimbels Brothers store has long been a downtown fixture, and over the years such department store merchandise has reflected the fashions, needs, customs - and prices - of the time. This picture was taken in the 1890s when the store still used an apostrophe in its name and utilized the Milwaukee River side of its building to billboard its contents. An 1895 newspaper ad for Gimbels provides a few insights into Milwaukee interests then. Hand embroidered initial handkerchiefs were 5 cents; five and seven-hook suede gloves were 75 cents; women's black wool tights, 98 cents; white eiderdown blankets, full size, 59 cents; silk and linen umbrellas, natural wood and Dresden handles, 89 cents; ladies' wool seal fur capes, $22.50; and black leather shopping bags, 19 cents.
