| Title | Remember When...E. Wells was called Oneida? |
| Description | "The city directory is Milwaukee's catalog" its ads used to proclaim, and certainly their listings are still a big help in pinpointing what's where in Milwaukee, especially in old photographs like this one. E. Wells St. was called Oneida St. when this picture was taken from the courthouse annex (located then in what is now Cathedral Square) in 1923. The camera looked west from the intersection of Oneida and Jefferson Sts. and took in a number of familiar Milwaukee landmarks-City Hall and the steeple of St. Mary's Church are two of the more noticeable ones. In the right foreground-the block between Jefferson and Milwaukee Sts.-there were several tire companies catering to a market still somewhat new-the automobile. A few buildings away, Miss Brown's School of Business in the Cary Building turned out workers trained in office and related skills. A neighbor of the school was the First Unity Center of Practical Christianity. Thomas W. Barto's grocery store anchored down one end of the block between Milwaukee and Broadway, with the City Police Patrol No.1 at the other end. The city wasn't too grown up; horse-drawn vehicles (like the one right of bottom center) still made a few deliveries. (Photograph and information from the Milwaukee Public Library.) |
