| Biography | Born February 17, 1918 in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, and holds Masters Degree in political science from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Served as naval officer in the Pacific during World War II. Elected to the State Senate in 1950 and served as Democratic minority leader from 1953 to 1960 when he was elected mayor. In 1964, re-elected by the largest plurality in local history. Nationally active in urban affairs, he was elected president of the American Municipal Association in 1964. Served longest mayoral term in Milwaukee history, 28 years. Instrumental in downtown renewal, establishment of the Dept. of City Development, and Summerfest. Second marriage to Karen Lamb in 1976. |
