This
summer
Milwaukeeans
once
again
will
enjoy
MacArthur
Square
with its
unique
clock
tower
. The
Schoenleber
Memorial
Clock
Tower
on the
plaza
was
erected
as a
family
memorial
and
gift
to the
people
of
Milwaukee
15
years
ago
.
It
stands
on the
site
of the
Schoenleber-Theede
family
home
built
in
1890
at
264-266
10th
St
.
It
was the
first
property
deeded
at its
assessed
valuation
to
Milwaukee
County
in
1925
for the
present
Courthouse
building
project
. The
85-foot
tower
is
made
of
three
structural
steel
arches
and has a
clock
,
stage
and
carillon
. The
teardrop
clock
,
suspended
from the
vaulted
roof
,
is
23-feet-high
and
weighs
2
½
tons
. Here
workmen
hung
the
clock
in
December
1969
.
Each
of the
clock's
three
faces
is
six
feet
in
diameter
and has
hands
three
feet
long
.
Below
the
clock
is
the
stage
with its
scenes
of
early
Wisconsin
and
Milwaukee
. In
1894
,
Otto
J
.
Schoenleber
,
already
a
successful
businessman
,
began
a
new
enterprise
and
founded
the
Ambrosia
Chocolate
Co
.
Schoenleber
,
who
died
in
1927
, was
active
in
various
community
organizations
. The
clock
tower
was a
gift
of his
daughters
Marie
,
Gretchen
and
Louise
Schoenleber
in
memory
of their
parents
,
Otto
J
. and
Emma
Theede
Schoenleber
.
