The focus of this collection is the history of electric railroads, streetcars, and buses in southeastern Wisconsin, especially those operated by the Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company in the early part of the 20th century. The collection includes two main types of items. The first is a set of Rail and Wire magazines, published by TMER&L Co. for the purpose of keeping their employees informed of company news, promoting the company and boosting employee morale. The second type of items are photographs of artifacts related to the operation of the trains, buses, and streetcars such as fare boxes, conductor uniforms, and ticket stubs.
This project is a collaboration of many organizations, including the East Troy Electric Railroad, the Milwaukee Transit Museum, the East Troy Public Library, and the East Troy Historical Society, and was made possible through Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds, awarded to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
