Title | Handmade applique quilt, 1850-1870 |
Subject |
Handicraft Quilting Quilts Sewing Textiles |
Subject (local) |
Finch, Lilla Law Hixon House Hixon, Alice Green |
Description | All cotton applique quilt, with fine, dense hand quilting. The motifs in this quilt have been cut out of colored cotton fabric and sewn down with tiny, near-invisible stitches. Label on back states: “L. L. Finch, over 100 years old.” The Finches had been friends of the Hixon family, and when she was widowed, Lilla Law Finch was allowed to live in the old Hixon House at Badger and 7th Streets during the late 1940's or early 1950's. She died in 1957. This example of red and green applique was probably handed down in her family and she may have given it to Alice Green Hixon in gratitude for use of the house, or it was left there after her death. The Hixon House collection consists of artifacts used by the Hixon family of La Crosse, Wisconsin around the turn of the twentieth century. Constructed in 1858 by lumber baron Gideon Hixon, the Hixon House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
